Make Your Wedding Vows Your Own

Customizing your vows is a great way to make your wedding vows your own. Here are five tips to get started:

1. Assure your partner you will always be there in the good times and bad
2. Share a personal story
3. Make a promise
4. Acknowledge not only your partner but your family and friends for their support
5. Be sure to say I love you!

The world’s oldest traditional wedding vows date back to the medieval church in England, and these manuals were based on the Sarum manual. The manuals were drafted by the dioceses of York and Salisbury and published in the Book of Common Prayer in 1549. At that time, young couples were presented with two choices; they could both promise to love and cherish one another, or the groom could promise to love, cherish and worship, while the bride could promise to love, cherish and obey.

However, the concept of wedding vows predates medieval European norms. During the Roman Empire, marriages were considered business arrangements between wealthy Roman families, often strengthening both entities through property disbursement or political alignment. When such arrangements were made, both families would sign documents outlining property rights. This was the true beginnings of recorded marriages.

This lovely couple read their customized wedding vows to one another and each was amazing! The bride broke out her glasses to read her vow to her soon-to-be husband.
